You are being invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide whether you would like to be involved, we would like to explain why the research is being done and what it will entail. Title of research: Investigating the big-five personality dimensions as contributory factors on fear of crime: A mediatory analysis.
Researchers: Our names are Eve Klama and Vince Egan from the University of Leicester School of Psychology.
Purpose of data collection: Student research
What is the purpose of this study? We are interested in the relationship between personality and attitudes to crime among Internet users.
What would I have to do? If English IS YOUR FIRST LANGUAGE OR YOU HAVE NO DIFFICULTIES WITH THE LANGUAGE, we would like you to fill in a questionnaire, taking approximately 20 minutes to complete. The questionnaire will seek information about your background, personality traits, fear of crime, personal feelings and attitudes.
Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential? All information which is collected during the course of the research will be kept strictly confidential. Your questionnaire does not have your name on it and THERE WILL BE NO WAY TO LINK YOUR RESPONSES BACK TO YOU ONCE THE INFORMATION IS WRITTEN TO FILE, so your data will be anonymous.
What will happen to the results of the research study? Once the research study is successfully completed, the overall results will be written up in a research report. If you wish we can arrange for you to obtain a copy of the findings.
Who is organizing the research? Psychologists at the University of Leicester Forensic department are conducting this research.

Consent Statement
1. I understand that my participation is voluntary and that I may withdraw from the research at any time up until submitting my questions, without giving any reason.
2. I am aware of what my participation will involve.
3. My data are to be held confidentially and only the researcher (Eve Klama) and supervisor (Vince Egan) will have access to them.
4. My data will be kept on a password secured hard drive for a period of at least five years after the appearance of any associated publications. Any aggregate data (e.g. spreadsheets) will be kept in electronic form for up to one year after which time they will be deleted.
5. In accordance with the requirements of some scientific journals and organisations, my coded data may be shared with other competent researchers. My coded data may also be used in other related studies.
6. The overall findings may be submitted for publication in a scientific journal, or presented at scientific conferences.
7. This study will take approximately six months to complete.
8. I will be able to obtain general information about the results of this research by contacting the researcher on the above stated email address.
